Internship
Our candidates fall into two classifications; those who are seeking graduate degrees through the Master of Instruction program and those who already possess a master's degree and are seeking certification through the course of study program. Regardless of how they are working towards certification, they must demonstrate competence in the knowledge of their profession during work in their field placements. For the candidates in the MI program, a separate product (portfolio) will be submitted as part of the requirements in the portfolio courses.
Internship Requirements
Candidates who have completed all of their course work are eligible to register for the Internship. The candidate will register for EDUC746-010, Internship in School Library Media. Candidates will have a minimum of 10 contact hours each in three schools covering the K-12 grade levels, identified by the program advisor. Beyond the contact hours in the schools, candidates will meet with the advisor to discuss the progress of the internship. The advisor will visit each site when the candidate is working there and will require written evaluations of the candidate from the mentoring librarians. Hours in each library will include face-to-face time working with students. It is preferable that the time includes both literature and information literacy activities. Candidates will be required to show evidence of meeting the four ALA/AASL Standards. In ten hours per site, it will be impossible to meet each standard in each library; however, each standard must be addressed in some way during the course of the entire internship. In addition to the portfolio requirements for the students, internship candidates will also have evaluations from the mentoring school library media specialists with whom they worked. The chart shows suggestions for types of evidence; however, candidates may supply other types of evidence with prior approval from the supervisor. The evidence and accompanying narrative will be put together according to the four ALA/AASL standards.
